Therapy
When you first contact me, I will offer a brief phone call to clarify your issues of concern and what you may be hoping for from therapy. This is also an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have. Our first session together will likely involve a deeper exploration of your concerns, understanding what you want from ongoing sessions and establishing goals and a plan for our work together.
My approach to therapy is:
Relational: In the words of Harville Hendrix, “we are wounded in relationship, and we can be healed in relationship.” Research shows us over and over that a good client-therapist relationship is a key factor in successful therapy.
Integrative: This involves integrating different theoretical backgrounds according to your needs and goals. There is no “one size fits all” in therapy and although I usually work primarily from a psychodynamic perspective, I may integrate elements or ideas from ACT, DBT, narrative therapy or Internal Family Systems depending on what we agree together might work best for you.
Integrative psychotherapy also focuses on helping you to gain insight into your experience and better understand yourself, including making contact with and integrating different parts of the self - which may at times be in conflict with each other - with the aim of leading to a greater sense of wholeness in one’s being and functioning.
Psychodynamic-informed: Psychodynamic psychotherapy aims to promote recovery, healing and self-growth through striving to gain a deep understanding of your experience and emotional life, both past and present. It seeks to make conscious that which is unconscious, that is, to help you to access thoughts, feelings and ideas of which you may not have not been consciously aware and which may be impacting issues such as anxiety, depression, poor self-esteem and difficulty with relationships.
It is suitable for people who are interested in exploring their inner world in detail, to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, to heal past experiences and to find the freedom to live more fulfilling, meaningful and richer lives as their best self.
